Gemini makes evaluation a portfolio capability

Google has introduced Gemini 1.0, a family of multimodal artificial intelligence models in three sizes: Ultra, Pro, and Nano. The models are designed to work across text, images, audio, video, and code, and to run in environments ranging from data centers to mobile devices.

The release adds another capable model family to a fast-changing field. For organizations, the strategic response is not to crown a universal winner. It is to become good at evaluating fit repeatedly.

Open models turn selection into engineering

Meta and Microsoft have announced commercial access to Llama 2, with support across Azure and Windows. The release expands the range of models organizations can host, adapt, and integrate under their own architectural choices rather than consume only through a closed service.

That optionality is valuable. It also moves more of the responsibility from procurement into engineering.

Function calling moves risk beyond the chat window

OpenAI has added function-calling support to its chat models. Developers can describe functions using structured definitions, and the model can return arguments that an application may use to call external tools or retrieve information.

This is an important improvement for building reliable integrations. It also makes a boundary explicit: the model proposes; the application decides what happens next.

Chiplets make architecture a supply-chain decision

International Business Machines (IBM) and ASM Pacific Technology (ASMPT) have announced progress in hybrid bonding, a packaging technique that can connect smaller chip components with far denser interconnections. The development is part of a broader move toward chiplets: modular components that can be combined into a larger system rather than fabricating every function on one monolithic chip.

The architectural promise is flexibility. The management challenge is that more of the system's performance and trust now lives at the interfaces among components and organizations.

Guardrails are architecture, not decoration

NVIDIA has released NeMo Guardrails, an open-source toolkit for adding programmable controls to applications built with large language models. The toolkit is intended to help developers keep conversations on topic, reduce harmful or inaccurate responses, and restrict unsafe connections to external applications.

The word guardrail can sound like a thin layer around an otherwise complete product. In a consequential artificial intelligence system, it should be treated as architecture.

Model choice creates a portfolio to govern

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced Amazon Bedrock, a managed service intended to give customers access to foundation models from several providers through a common cloud environment. The appeal is obvious: teams can experiment with different models and choose the capability that fits the application without building the underlying infrastructure themselves.

Choice reduces dependence on a single model. It also creates a portfolio that somebody has to govern.

Tool-using AI needs explicit authority

OpenAI has begun introducing plugins that let ChatGPT retrieve current information, run computations, and interact with external services. The early examples include browsing, code execution, travel, shopping, and other application connections.

This changes the nature of the system. A model that produces text can mislead. A model connected to tools can also act.

Enterprise AI begins at the platform boundary

Microsoft has made Azure OpenAI Service generally available, giving approved customers access to large generative models through Azure's enterprise infrastructure. The announcement will be read primarily as expanded access to capable models. For organizations deciding whether to build with them, the more important development is the boundary being placed around those models.

Enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) begins where a general capability meets identity, data, security, reliability, cost, and accountability.
