Democratic Lawmakers Introduce Legislation to Examine AI’s Environmental Impact¶
A group of Democratic lawmakers is proposing legislation aimed at investigating the environmental implications of artificial intelligence (AI). This act would assign fresh responsibilities to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The AI Environmental Impacts Act of 2024¶
The proposed legislation, known as the Artificial Intelligence Environmental Impacts Act of 2024, calls for NIST to establish a methodology for assessing the potential environmental effects that AI might induce.
EPA, DOE, and NIST’s New Responsibilities¶
In accordance with the proposal, the EPA would be responsible for carrying out a study on the climate impact of AI. Simultaneously, NIST would be tasked with forming an AI Environmental Impact consortium and designing a voluntary reporting system. This would enable companies to share potential climate impacts of their models openly.
Joint Report and Future Recommendations¶
The legislation would also necessitate a joint report from DOE, NIST, and the EPA within four years. Collectively, these agencies would be mandated to provide recommendations for future legislation.
Conclusion¶
The proposed legislation underlines a growing focus on AI’s energy consumption and computational demands, drawing attention to the definitive role technology plays in shaping our environment. For more detailed understanding, refer to the original FedScoop article .
